Tackling Skills Shortages in the Mallee Region

Skills shortages and workforce training needs will top the agenda at the inaugural Mallee Regional Skills Taskforce meeting in Mildura on Monday.

Prominent Mallee business leaders and local council representatives will meet with the Victorian Skills Commissioner Neil Coulson to discuss the unique training and skills requirements of the region, workforce pressures and future industry growth priorities.

The taskforce, designed to highlight the importance of skills development in Victoria’s regions, will meet four times between May and November to ensure barriers to providing training to meet regional demand can be identified and overcome.

The taskforce will also identify any skills shortages and both existing and future workforce training needs and promote quality training pathways that lead to qualifications, skills development and jobs in the Mallee region.

Mr Coulson, who will chair the taskforce, said the meetings are crucial to gather intelligence on the skilling and training needs in Victoria’s regions.

“One of our priorities is to better align training to the skills people need to get the jobs they want in our regions and that meet local industry needs,” Mr Coulson said.

“It is very important to hear from the key industry players in the Mallee region who will provide us with a deeper level of intelligence and perspective on regional skilling issues so we can shape training to address their needs.”

WHEN: Monday, 22 May, 2017 | WHERE: Mildura Airport
